SUMMARY:Climate Change and Fire Management
DESCRIPTION:January 31\, 2023\n9:00am – 10:00am PST\n \nClimate Services Speaker Series: Climate Change and Fire Management\, Dr. Mike Flannigan \nOur climate and associated day-to-day weather are changing rapidly due to human activities that may have dramatic and unexpected impacts on regional and global fire activity. A warmer world means a longer fire season\, more lightning activity\, and most importantly drier fuels. Drier fuels means it is easier for a fire to start\, to spread and it means more fuel is available to burn that leads to higher intensity fires that are difficult to impossible to extinguish. Existing studies suggest regional increases in fire occurrence and area burned although there is significant temporal and spatial variability. Our fire regime is driven by extremes\, and we expect an increase in frequency and intensity of extreme fire weather episodes. Climate change will likely mean more wildfire in the future for many regions of the world including Canada. We will have to learn to live with wildfire. \nJeremy Fyke will discuss an ongoing project to develop future projections of fire weather indices across Canada under climate change. \nNote that the official webinar will run from 12PM to 1PM ET\, however you are welcome to join us for an unofficial question and discussion period from 1PM to 1:30PM ET. This session will be delivered in English. \nRegister for this webinar on Microsoft Teams.

SUMMARY:Facing the Flames - New and Old Ways of Co-Existing with Fire
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, December 6\n5:00-7:00pm (reception to follow)\nHybrid dialogue: Online and in-person\nMorris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue\, 580 West Hastings St.\, Vancouver\, BC \nThe emergence of catastrophic mega-fires over the past five years demands transformative action in BC. Unprecedented fires are burning huge tracts of culturally and ecologically important territory\, threatening lives and livelihoods\, blanketing the province in smoke\, exacerbating systemic inequities\, and releasing staggering amounts of emissions into the atmosphere. It’s a frequency\, scale\, and severity we’ve never seen before\, fuelled by growing climate impacts\, altered forest landscapes\, and the forced removal of Indigenous Stewardship and good fire from these lands.  Catastrophic mega-fires that we’re unable to suppress and control are our emerging reality– but they don’t have to be. \nJoin the SFU Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue in exploring big ideas for the future of wildfire in BC. Speakers Joe Gilchrist\, Salish Interior Firekeeper\, and Paul Hessburg\, Senior Research Ecologist with US Forest Services\, will illuminate the rapidly changing landscape of wildfire and ignite dialogue on pathways forward. \nRegister for this event on Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:We All Take Care of the Harvest (WATCH): Safe and secure harvesting of marine foods in a changing climate
DESCRIPTION:Thursday November 24\, 2022\n11:00am – 12:00pm PST    \nSpeaker: Holly Clermont\, Project Lead at the First Nations Health Authority \nYou may have heard the saying\, “When the tide is out the table is set.” But is it really? Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are one of many threats that are growing in frequency\, duration and intensity in a warming world. New harmful species are making their way into our waters. Toxins are flowing into the marine environment with each atmospheric river. Intertidal species are baking during heat domes. \nThe WATCH Project is a collaborative seafood and climate change pilot project that is examining how climate impacts layer onto existing challenges\, including deeply rooted policy gaps and barriers. With community-based monitoring\, and adaptation planning that explores exposures\, sensitivities and adaptive capacities among human communities as well as the marine food species that are important to them\, we are taking important steps to help ensure safe and secure seafood harvests for coastal First Nations. \nRegister for this webinar on Zoom! \n

SUMMARY:Climate Services Speaker Series - Planning for the future: deriving future climate IDF curves for the City of Calgary
DESCRIPTION:November 24\, 2022\n8:00am – 9:00am PST\nMicrosoft Teams \nIntensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curves relate short-duration rainfall intensity with its frequency of occurrence and are often used for flood forecasting and urban drainage design. Historically\, IDF curves have been calculated from historical rainfall data. However\, planning and design of infrastructure that is resilient in a changing climate requires IDF data that incorporate climate change projections. This presentation will highlight work done for the City of Calgary and the Calgary Airport Authority to develop several types of future climate change data\, including future climate change IDF curves\, and how this data is being integrated into design guidelines and planning. \nAdditionally\, the Canadian Centre for Climate Services will briefly speak to new climate change-scaled IDF data that will soon be available on ClimateData.ca. \nRegister for this webinar on Microsoft Teams!

SUMMARY:Introducing the Cost of Doing Nothing Toolbox
DESCRIPTION:November 16\, 2022\n10:00am PST\, online via Zoom \nICLEI Canada is delighted to introduce a new resource to support municipal adaptation planning: the Cost of Doing Nothing (CODN) Toolbox. Join this webinar to learn how to use the CODN Toolbox to build a local business case for climate adaptation. \nThe mounting costs of climate change present a serious fiscal and logistical challenge for municipalities whose budgets and capacities are already stretched. Without immediate action\, these costs will only increase and threaten to consume funds and resources needed for maintaining and operating critical services and addressing existing and emerging priorities. \nThe CODN Toolbox provides a jumping off point for municipalities to assess the costs of doing nothing within their own local context and support their own climate adaptation planning process. \nRegister for this webinar on Zoom!
