SUMMARY:We All Take Care of the Harvest (WATCH): Safe and secure harvesting of marine foods in a changing climate
DESCRIPTION:Thursday November 24\, 2022\n11:00am – 12:00pm PST    \nSpeaker: Holly Clermont\, Project Lead at the First Nations Health Authority \nYou may have heard the saying\, “When the tide is out the table is set.” But is it really? Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are one of many threats that are growing in frequency\, duration and intensity in a warming world. New harmful species are making their way into our waters. Toxins are flowing into the marine environment with each atmospheric river. Intertidal species are baking during heat domes. \nThe WATCH Project is a collaborative seafood and climate change pilot project that is examining how climate impacts layer onto existing challenges\, including deeply rooted policy gaps and barriers. With community-based monitoring\, and adaptation planning that explores exposures\, sensitivities and adaptive capacities among human communities as well as the marine food species that are important to them\, we are taking important steps to help ensure safe and secure seafood harvests for coastal First Nations. \nRegister for this webinar on Zoom! \n

SUMMARY:Climate Services Speaker Series - Planning for the future: deriving future climate IDF curves for the City of Calgary
DESCRIPTION:November 24\, 2022\n8:00am – 9:00am PST\nMicrosoft Teams \nIntensity Duration Frequency (IDF) curves relate short-duration rainfall intensity with its frequency of occurrence and are often used for flood forecasting and urban drainage design. Historically\, IDF curves have been calculated from historical rainfall data. However\, planning and design of infrastructure that is resilient in a changing climate requires IDF data that incorporate climate change projections. This presentation will highlight work done for the City of Calgary and the Calgary Airport Authority to develop several types of future climate change data\, including future climate change IDF curves\, and how this data is being integrated into design guidelines and planning. \nAdditionally\, the Canadian Centre for Climate Services will briefly speak to new climate change-scaled IDF data that will soon be available on ClimateData.ca. \nRegister for this webinar on Microsoft Teams!

SUMMARY:Introducing the Cost of Doing Nothing Toolbox
DESCRIPTION:November 16\, 2022\n10:00am PST\, online via Zoom \nICLEI Canada is delighted to introduce a new resource to support municipal adaptation planning: the Cost of Doing Nothing (CODN) Toolbox. Join this webinar to learn how to use the CODN Toolbox to build a local business case for climate adaptation. \nThe mounting costs of climate change present a serious fiscal and logistical challenge for municipalities whose budgets and capacities are already stretched. Without immediate action\, these costs will only increase and threaten to consume funds and resources needed for maintaining and operating critical services and addressing existing and emerging priorities. \nThe CODN Toolbox provides a jumping off point for municipalities to assess the costs of doing nothing within their own local context and support their own climate adaptation planning process. \nRegister for this webinar on Zoom!

SUMMARY:The Heat Dome\, one year later
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to look far to know that extreme climate events are here to stay. Unprecedented and devastating wildfires and floods\, noticeable changes in weather and seasons\, and extreme heat events have affected the lives of millions of people. The economic\, health\, and social impacts of these events are enormous. Last year provided many lived examples of this including the devastating effects of last summer’s heat wave\, and the heat dome on British Columbians and all Canadians. \nJoin Royal Roads University on June 28th\, 2022  – the anniversary of the hottest day in 2021 – for a webinar exploring the lessons learned from the heat dome\, and the changes we need to make to address future heat events. The webinar will bring together climate and heat dome researchers\, emergency health practitioners\, and social justice  advocates in a dynamic discussion of where the province is at\, one year later\, and where we need to get to if we are to be collectively resilient moving forward. \nRegister for this webinar at Royal Roads University!

SUMMARY:SBC Webinar: Adapting to Extreme Heat
DESCRIPTION:Join Sustainable Buildings Canada for a presentation of the recent report Irreversible Extreme Heat: Protecting Canadians and Communities From a Lethal Future. This report\, from the University of Waterloo and Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation\, provides guidance on the future of extreme heat events in Canada and how property owners and managers\, designers\, and planners can take action now to minimize the impact of these natural disasters. \nJoanna Eyquem from the Intact Centre will review the findings of the report\, which illustrates the effects of extreme heat\, including hundreds of heat-related deaths across Canada in recent years. Joanna will review how\, through daily practice\, designers and planners can improve buildings in Canada to prevent the worst effects of these natural disasters. Canada is warming at twice the average global rate and our urban areas face the greatest risks because extreme heat is exacerbated by the urban heat island effect\, which can be reduced through good design practices. \nRegister for this webinar on GoToWebinar!

SUMMARY:Fires and Floods Webinar
DESCRIPTION:When: June 7\, 2022\, 12pm – 1pm\nWhere: Online \nThe world is heating up\, issuing a rising number of severe storms\, droughts and record-breaking temperatures that are wreaking havoc on communities and economies. The price tag to repair recent catastrophic flooding that washed out sections of the Coquihalla highway\, as well as other roadways\, farms and homes in the Fraser Valley\, will likely be in the billions of dollars. Do land management practices\, such as clearcutting\, play a role in devastating floods? What about the role of fire suppression and land management practices in massive wildfires? Our expert panel will discuss some of the forestry practices that are shaping landscapes in BC and how the profession can help mitigate the impact of extreme weather-related events. \nRegister here for this webinar!

SUMMARY:Health of Canadians in a Changing Climate: Chapter 6 - Infectious diseases
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Dr. Nick Ogden from the Public Health Agency of Canada will present the methodology and contents of the Infectious Diseases chapter of the recently released report- Health of Canadians in a Changing Climate: Advancing Our Knowledge for Action. \nThe chapter highlights the impacts of climate change on risks from infectious diseases of importance for public health in Canada\, including those that are current\, known disease risks (e.g.\, Lyme disease\, West Nile virus) and new risks that may emerge. It identifies the evidence to date of changing patterns that could be\, or are\, attributable to recent climate change. Current capacity for adaptation for increasing/changing infectious disease risks will be explored\, and gaps and future opportunities identified. \nRegister for this webinar on Zoom!

SUMMARY:Our Future with Fire: Barriers and Opportunities for the Revitalization of Fire Stewardship
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, Dr. Hoffman will describe some of the factors that have contributed to the recent impactful wildfire seasons experienced in British Columbia in the last five years. She will discuss some of the barriers to applying controlled fire to the broader landbase and the importance of supporting Indigenous-led fire stewardship. \nDr. Kira Hoffman is a fire ecologist and former wildland firefighter. Hoffman’s research focuses on how humans have used fire for millennia to manage and enhance their natural surroundings. In concert with Indigenous and local ecological knowledge\, she uses western science to better understand how present-day forests have been shaped by stewardship techniques such as burning and how ongoing fire suppression has eroded the resiliency of landscapes and human communities. \nRegister on Zoom!
